Green Stripe Initiative is a U.S. Embassy Abuja-wide volunteer committee open to all who are interested in identifying ways the American diplomatic community in Abuja, Nigeria can better care for the natural environment and reduce our impact on Nigeria and the world. In April 2019, Green Stripe Initiative hosted a launch event to kick off their first focus as an initiative—embassy-wide recycling.
Since then, over 3,000 kilograms of Embassy waste has been diverted from Nigerian landfills through local company Chanja Datti. Instead, proceeds from the waste value have been donated via the “Bottles for Books” program to help over two dozen local Nigerian children go to school this year—many for the first time ever! These “Eco-Scholars” are identified and selected because they are among the poorest in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja.
On America Recycles Day 2019, the Green Stripe Initiative will continue to promote the importance of recycling to all Embassy employees and families in our community–American diplomats and Nigerians alike–by collecting plastic bottles and displaying them prominently on the Embassy compound throughout the week leading up to the main campaign date, and distributing educational material about the value of recycling and why it is important to care for the earth.
