America Recycles Day Events – November 15 & 16, 2017
Glendale Community College (GCC) celebrates America Recycles Day with an annual Recycle Dive. Volunteers sort through an entire day of recycling to see how much of our recycling is contaminated. Please join us on November 15, 2017 at 7:00 a.m. in the Central Mall, located west of the Library & Media Center, to participate in this event.
Stop by the informational table in the Student Union from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. to take the pledge to do your part to recycle more. The Glendale Environmental Club will be handing out America Recycles Day promotional items and answering questions about recycling in the City of Glendale.
The results of the Recycle Dive will be announced at 12:00 p.m. in the Student Union, room SU-104E, followed by a guest speaker. GCC welcomes Dr. Ryne P. Raffaelle, presenting “Our Shared Energy Culture.” Dr. Ryne P. Raffaelle is presently the Vice President for Research and Associate Provost at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY. Dr. Raffaelle has more than 20 years of experience leading laboratory research teams. He is the former Academic Director for the Golisano Institute for Sustainability and Director of the NanoPower Research Laboratory at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in New York. At RIT, he also served as a professor of physics, microsystems engineering and sustainability and was responsible for more than $20 million in research grants in photovoltaics, thin-film processing, and nanomaterials research.
Green Efforts is showing “An Inconvenient Truth” on Thursday, November 16th (2:30 – 3:30 p.m.) in MA-142. Director Davis Guggenheim eloquently weaves the science of global warming with former Vice President Al Gore’s personal history and lifelong commitment to reversing the effects of global climate change in the most talked-about documentary of the year. An audience and critical favorite, An Inconvenient Truth makes the compelling case that global warming is real, man-made, and its effects will be cataclysmic if we don’t act now. Gore presents a wide array of facts and information in a thoughtful and compelling way: often humorous, frequently emotional, and always fascinating. In the end, An Inconvenient Truth accomplishes what all great films should: it leaves the viewer shaken, involved and inspired.
GCC is also a drop-off location for the City of Glendale’s Domestic Violence Cell Phone Drive. The City of Glendale collects cell phones for America Recycles Day. Glendale has developed a special cell phone recycling program that runs the entire month of November. The Glendale Family Advocacy Center will collect and arrange the phones for recycling. Once the phones are refurbished, they will become available for victims of stalking and domestic violence. The drop-off location is in our Administration building in the Facilities Management office, room A-57.
